What's the next best thing to sending your entire Board of Directors to an NCRC conference? After this past weekend, for Peach City Radio, it's bringing the flavour and experience of a community radio guru to you!
For their annual planning retreat this year, the Board of Directors decided that it was time to engage someone who would give us a real taste of what it takes to not only make a radio station, but to make it great. As a result, we were very pleased to welcome Myke Atkinson to Penticton over the past weekend. Myke is the current Station Manager at Calgary's CJSW 90.9FM campus/community station at the University of Calgary. Myke brought with him his entire toolbag, which includes 13 years of experience both as a member and DJ at the station, through News Director, Music Director and most recently Station Manager.
Over 30 community members - most of whom are current members of our Society - attended a public talk at the Ramada on Friday, where Myke spoke for almost 2 hours. Intermixed with interesting stories about interesting people, he gave us a glimpse into what it really means to be a family at a community radio station - a goal well worth striving for.
On Saturday, the Board spent over 6 hours with Myke, talking through several scenarios, and laying down a plan for the BIG YEAR ahead of us. We looked over our past, reviewed our successes and failures, and refocused our energies towards the future. We all look forward to moving Peach City Radio into the future!
So, a big thanks to CJSW for letting us borrow your guru for the weekend, and a big thanks to Myke for seeing our potential, and helping to make it shine. Myke's talk will become part of the podcast archive and will be broadcast under our Peach City Speakers show soon - stay tuned!
